DORMESHIA

 

Dormeshia's journey in tap dance is a remarkable testament to her exceptional talent and dedication.  Born with rhythm in her veins, she has become a celebrated figure, earning the title "queen of tap" from The New York Times.  Her accolades include the Doris Duke Artist Award, the Jcob's Pillow Dance Award, and the Bessie Award, among others.  Dormeshia's electrifying performance in Broadway's "After Midnight" garnered her an Astaire Award for Best Female Performer,

As a choreographer and educator, she has significantly contributed to the art form.  Her choreography for "Jelly's Last Jam" at New York City Center, received rave reviews and her full-length work, "And Still You Must Swing", was recognized as one of the "Best of Dance" by The New York Times.  Dormeshia is the producer of the "Ladies in the Shoe" Tap Conference, celebrating women in tap dance, and co-directs the Jacob's Pillow Tap Program, nurturing the next generation of dancers.

Beyond the stage, Dormeshia has influenced popular culture, having been the tap instructor for Michael Jackson.  Her legacy is immortalized in the Forever Collection of U.S. Postage Stamps.  Dormeshia continues to inspire through her artistry, pusing the boundaries of tap while honoring its rich traditions.
