Celebrating Duke Ellington and the Harlem Renaissance
This show features dynamic performances by NJTAP's extraordinary tap artists and the NJTAP Youth Company's young artists. Live music is performed under the direction of J. Leonard Oxley, including selections from the Duke Ellington songbook. This show tours with Guest Narrator Mercedes Ellington, Duke Ellington's granddaughter and a guest vocalist. In describing the inspiration for the show, Deborah Mitchell, says "For tap dancers, Duke Ellington's music provides an opportunity for an endless range of expression. It is easy to honor his legacy and enormous artistic contribution that spans more than seven decades, beginning with the Harlem Renaissance, but difficult to compress his genius into a single evening." "Duke done right...one dance highlight after another!" Asbury Park Press
First Stop on the "A" Train
The New Jersey Tap Dance Ensemble's First Stop on the 'A' Train takes the audience on a joy-filled ride from Harlem to Hollywood, exploring and celebrating the contributions of African American artists from the street corner to the stage and screen. The concert performance recreates the explosive energy and elegance of the Harlem Renaissance, drawing inspiration from pioneers from Bill "Bojangles" Robinson through to the powerful driving force of today's tap dancers. "An infectiously high-spirited program" Newark Star-Ledger.
Generation Tap
Artistic Director Deborah Mitchell created Generation Tap to showcase dancers, music and social influences from the mid-20th Century to the present day, and to remind audiences that all those who put on tap shoes to dance share a love of this American art form. The show features works by Ms. Mitchell and emerging choreographers, performed by NJTAP2's acclaimed dancers. "Informal and relaxed, yet packed with adventure, Generation Tap is one of the most delightful programs the New Jersey Tap Ensemble has produced." Newark Star-Ledger
The Next Step
The Next Step is a tap dance celebration, showcasing successful favorite concerts from NJTAP's repertoire and including new works choreographed by noted artists including Deborah Mitchell, Tony-Award winner Savion Glover, and others. Live orchestra with music arranged and orchestrated by NJTAP's Music Director and Broadway veteran J. Leonard Oxley. "A wealth of talented dancers with consistently high energy levels, and a repertoire that reaches from jazz classics into the future." Newark Star-Ledger
The Woodshed
An informal performance where NJTAP First Company dancers dance and talk as they share their individual styles, dance history, and inspiration. The Woodshed is based on an expression tap dancers use to refer to their private work in 'getting' a dance step or piece. Group performance and rehearsal activities are presented. A drummer and pianist play and interact with the dancers. Includes discussion and audience participation. |
